What Happened to Us These Last Couple Years?

Three Poems
by Misti Rainwater-Lites

The Glow-in-the-Dark Astronaut Bank Cradles The Little Buddha

on the bar

behind them you will find
sparkly clean wine glasses
and kama sutra coasters

the bank is empty
underneath the buddha
is a chinese couple engaged in coitus
this priceless tableau
makes married life a bit
more fun

He Stands Over Me

spitting his words down
on my face
telling me i can't even
do the laundry right

the baby in my belly
is jumping
wondering when
i am going to eat
and sing the songs
i sing to soothe him

later he apologizes
drives me across town
for the sonogram that
confirms our baby
has a penis
then he takes me to the
whataburger we ate in once
on a lunch break
when we were co-workers
and friends
newly
in
love

One Afternoon During A Lull

we were talking about scorpions and schizophrenia
we were discussing anal sex and politics
we were pondering tornados more destructive than a typical F5
we touched on jesus
joked about rosco p. coltrane
planned to meet up later for taquitos and tequila
