What Happened to Us These Last Couple Years?

I Am Afraid of Light
by Christopher Higgs

Kids foursquare. Truck driver freeway. Guy porch city machine. Park. Frisbee.

Slow tall fat man down bedroom scream.

Dusk picnic slash and church. Hollywood sign. Apartment. Woman television sofa. Man faces his face.

White office. More faces. Slim woman couch, mid-sentence. Cemetery. Man neighbor dead. No questions. Group of faces cemetery funeral. Not guilty.

Dreams man neighbor dead. Warm environment. Bar hum noise man bartender. Car cigarettes. Paintings finger boy walls.

Specters horizon shackled feet. Birds thunderstorms strawberries.

"I am afraid of light and what moves when it is absent."

Soft teeth. A message. The germ's infection. Frisbee toss park. Woods bike mountains. Foursquare.

Hospital plastic linoleum wind chime. Fist finger glove pain tobacco. Apology. Goodbye.

About the author:
Christopher Higgs lives in Clintonville, Ohio, which is the name of a Columbus neighborhood founded in 1847, not a nickname for an area of Hillary supporters. He curates the online arts journal Bright Stupid Confetti.
