Three Poems
by Ross Leese

attracted to melody

she said
all you ever
think about
are the beatles
and I couldn't argue

as even then

she seemed
to be speaking
beautiful
         musical
                 notes.

so to spite her
I listen to
neil young
for two songs
and then crawl
into wednesday

remembering
a girl
once told me
I was attracted
to melody
the same way
her mother
was to drunks.

breaking an uncomfortable silence

we are all stood
around the room-
silent
and
searching
for something
to
say

quickly.

nobody
notices
the cat walk in
purr
and set
off
a chain reaction

of bullshit--

the collective
sigh
of
relief.

leap year

every 4 years
or so
somebody
will turn
to me
and say
I'm a genius

more often
than not
it's someone
I barely know

which is great--

it means
my first
impressions
are getting
better

and my
lasting
impressions
are becoming
as
superfluous
as my
talent.
