Wow. This piece just draws you in, like you are in that awkward space in the hospital room. As someone who writes about victims of political violence I can relate to the author’s ambiguous feelings about her role documenting painful events, and admire her courage in putting it down for everyone to share it.

This essay gives the reader a nuanced complexity around the struggles of role and identity in these complicated connections. It’s quick-witted, insightful, sad, with something new to say about the role of documentation, of witness.

The writer takes us on a roller-coaster ride of emotions–hers as well as the other characters in the piece–and leaves us wanting to learn more. I look forward to reading “When Birdboy Calls.”

Loved this essay. So often artists seem to be caught creating art at the expense of others – this author created art but made me love David too. Kickass.

I really enjoyed this piece. I was laughing at the beginning, but didn’t expect it to kick my ass at the end and leave me in tears. Thank you Word Riot for another interesting story.
